About the Charities

sustainable coastlines

We are a dynamic charity that sets out to sustain and protect our coastlines. We coordinate education with the simple, grass-roots activity of a coastal cleanup. Over the past year we have run a string of highly successful large scale events, which have shown to motivate people around New Zealand into looking after their local coastlines.

All donations received during Choptober will go towards educational resources and coordination for a huge series of events that we are running in December in New Zealand's main centres with thousands of school children.

cholmondeley

What is Cholmondeley?

Cholmondeley supports the children of Canterbury when their parents cannot. The children we care for are aged between 3 and 12 years and come from families with issues ranging from severe illness to substance abuse and addiction.

Cholmondeley has been supporting the children of Canterbury for 85 years and we are very proud of the children that have left our care. Cholmondeley is the only community based respite provider left in New Zealand and one of a few international facilities of its kind left. This makes us truly unique. Because most of our funding comes from the community (events like Choptober!) it means that we are autonomous and we can lead the way New Zealand looks at child protection and best practice.

Where will the funds raised from Choptober go?

The funds raised from Choptober are so important to Cholmondeley. The money that is donated goes towards the real costs we have here at Cholmondeley such as the cost of food, power, transport, clothing and staffing.

We hope that you will support Cholmondeley for Choptober 2010. If you would like to learn more please check out our website www.cholmondeley.org.nz

southern stars

Southern Stars Charitable Trust was incorporated with the aim of improving the lives of special needs and disadvantaged children who at various stages of their lives need assistance. Our mission is to improve the lives of children who have been affected by illness, disability or social circumstances. We achieve this by creating entertaining events including live performance pantomimes, the annual Kids Big Day Out and the Grant-A-Wish programme.

9,000 special needs and disadvantaged children as well as their caregivers are sponsored by the general public to attend the live performance pantomime designed to stimulate the mind of the children through the creativity and imagination of live theatre with proceeds going towards a specific cause or children’s charity.

With the donations from the Choptober campaign, we would like to extend the Southern Stars Grant-A-Wish programme. "Southern Stars Grant-A-Wish" gives children with ongoing medical conditions, terminal illnesses and other life changing conditions the chance to have wishes granted.

These wishes could be anything from a ride in a high performance car, a helicopter ride, a makeover or swimming with dolphins. The programme is designed to ‘Help kids be kids’ for which we need more funding to be able to fulfil all requested wishes.

kidsline

Kidsline (which is one of the Lifeline family of services) provides free telephone counselling & support to children up to the age of 14 from right across NZ. Counsellors support callers with are wide range of issues that can include bullying, friendship difficulties, family problems, anxiety &
depression, self harm, neglect and abuse.

One of Kidslines main points of difference is its counsellors (called Kidsline Buddies) who are young people in years 12 and 13 from local schools. Buddies undergo first rate counselling training and support the callers in finding empowering ways to deal with what is going on for them.

The benefit of this model of counselling is felt by both the children calling Kidsline (who feel fully “heard” and empowered) and also the Buddies themselves who go on to be exceptional members of the community – taking their counselling skills, empathy and sense of confidence with them into their adult lives.
